Determine Your Own Values And Desires Rather Than Comparing Yourself To Others

Try to notice when you are unconsciously comparing yourself to others. Look out for a feeling of vague anxiety that something isn’t good enough. Start to probe the feeling. What is it, exactly? Your shampoo is too cheap, maybe. Or your plants are too drab. But wait – where is this coming from? Are you really dissatisfied with your plants, or did you happen to visit a friend yesterday who’s growing a veritable tropical jungle in his apartment? Haven’t your three potted plants made you consistently happy all summer? Yes, they have. And has anything changed? No, it hasn’t. The only thing happening here is that you are comparing yourself to someone else rather than determining your own values and desires. Talking yourself through thought exercises like these can make it easier to break that habit.
